Connecting with you across Australia and beyond

We offer practical, no-nonsense counselling designed specifically for men — and for women who want to better understand the men in their lives. Based in Brisbane, we provide phone and video counselling that connects with clients across Australia and even internationally.

Why Men Are Struggling These Days

The role of a man in modern society looks nothing like it did 100 years ago.

Men are no longer expected – or even required – to be the primary provider and protector of their families, yet they’re still wired to be stoic, strong, and self-reliant.

The problem? Most men haven’t been taught how to process emotion, manage conflict, or express vulnerability in healthy ways.

Many feel uncertain about their place in the world – about who they are outside of work, or how to connect meaningfully with their partners, family, and friends.

They struggle with stress, grief, and trauma, often coping through silence or unhealthy habits.

And when it comes to relationships, fatherhood, or emotional support, they may simply never have had good examples to follow.

If this sounds familiar – whether for you or someone you love – it might be time to reach out to Man Counsellor.

What We Do and Why It’s Different

We don’t diagnose mental health conditions or provide long-term therapy — we leave that to psychologists and psychiatrists.

Instead, we help men find better, more effective ways to deal with life’s challenges, in the context of what it means to be a man today. Whether it’s handling stress, supporting a partner, resolving conflict, or rebuilding confidence after setbacks, our approach is practical and straightforward.

We help men move beyond outdated expectations and develop the tools to cope, connect, and perform better in every area of life.

For women, we offer insight and guidance on how to support the men in their lives — what many describe as a “translation service” for understanding the male mind.

Most clients see meaningful progress within 3 - 6 sessions. Appointments are available by phone or video, with the option to keep your camera off for privacy or anonymity.

Expect warmth without fluff, accountability without judgement, and progress you can measure.

Our goal isn’t to keep you in therapy — it’s to help you get unstuck and move forward.

Meet The Founder of Man Counsellor

Dr Philip Armstrong

Philip knows what pressure feels like — and how to turn it into purpose.

He spent 15 years in the Australian Army, serving overseas, rappelling out of helicopters, and working as a qualified small arms coach. He later pushed his limits on endurance climbs such as Everest Base Camp and Mount Kilimanjaro, raising funds for causes close to his heart.

After being medically discharged, Philip rebuilt his life from the ground up — physically, mentally, and professionally. He retrained as a counsellor, earned a PhD, and went on to help shape the counselling profession across Australia and the Asia-Pacific.

Philip founded Man Counsellor to create a space where men can talk openly, learn practical coping tools, and work through challenges without judgment or jargon. His approach is grounded in lived experience, professional expertise, and a genuine belief that men grow stronger through self-awareness — not silence.

Who We Help

Counselling sessions are open to anyone who wants to better understand themselves — or the men in their lives.

We work with:

  • Men aged 18+ seeking clarity, confidence, and practical coping tools
  • Women looking for guidance in supporting or communicating with their partner, father, brother, or son

Sessions are available online or by phone, for clients across Australia and worldwide (excluding North America, due to insurance reasons).

Fees and Rebates

Our counselling sessions are priced fairly — often well below the cost of seeing a psychologist or psychiatrist.

You don’t need a GP referral or a Mental Health Care Plan to book an appointment.

While Medicare rebates don’t apply, we’re partnered with several private health funds that do offer rebates for counselling sessions.
